Shared Vision: Learning & Development

Thorpe Nursery Pre-School aim to provide our children with rich and stimulating learning experiences provided through play in a happy and safe environment. We believe that children’s early experiences are important to build strong foundations for their life long learning journey. We recognise that all children are unique and learn in many different ways.

We also believe that parents/guardians have the most influence in a child’s life. We view parents as our partners in the education of their children and we wish to work together in collaboration to help all children enjoy and achieve their full potential.

Thorpe Nursery Pre-School are committed to continuous quality improvement.

Understanding The EYFS

EYFS stands for Early Years Foundation Stage. The EYFS is a comprehensive framework which sets the standards for early years development, learning and welfare from birth to five years of age. It provides a structure to guide practitioners with providing effective provision in their settings and builds on previous guidance. There is also guidance on children’s development and useful hints on planning and resourcing framework for children from Birth to the end of Reception Year in School.

The EYFS has four themes and principles:

A UNIQUE CHILD

Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS

Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key  person.

ENABLING ENVIRONMENTS

The environment plays a key role in supporting and  extending children’s development and learning.

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT

Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and interconnected.

Implementing The EYFS at Thorpe Nursery Pre-School

Thorpe Nursery Pre-School are committed to help children learn through play. The toys and activities on offer throughout the day are designed to provide a wide range of learning opportunities that will encourage the children to become competent learners ready for more formal learning once they start school. We feel that by observing children in their own initiated play, we are able to make judgements on their   development and plan for future learning opportunities. All our activities are carefully planned to reflect the interests and capabilities of the children in our care. Your child’s time at pre-school will be a mixture of both structured time and free play. All children are supported in developing their potential at their own individual pace. We use a mix of child initiated play and adult led teaching.

The EYFS Development Matters Focuses on Seven Areas of Learning

Three Prime Areas: Personal Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Communication and Language.

Four Specific Areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understand the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Playing Outdoors

At Thorpe Nursey Pre-School we have a large garden in which children can explore and enhance their learning. Outdoors children communicate differently with freer, louder ‘outdoor’ voices and are enthusiastic to share and talk about their discoveries.

We offer a range of outdoor learning experiences, both structured and unstructured. Children can access sand play, water play, mud kitchen, digging, planting, grow, look after, water, and watch the progress of vegetables which then can be harvested and used on the snack bar for the children to sample.

Other outdoor activities include sound walks, parachute games, streamers  chalking, large painting, cars, trikes, climbing, lengths of planks and guttering so children can work together to move, build, take turns and work out solutions to problems, balance beams, den building to name but a few.

Children need to develop their gross motor skills and core strength to aid in their development of their fine motor skills such as writing.

We go out in all weathers, so children need to have waterproof clothing and welly boots in which to keep at nursery. We have one sheltered area a purpose build pergola at the rear of the nursery which children can access directly from the back room. In summertime the trees around the garden also provide natural shade from the sun, in addition we can put up a gazebo.
